Reader's & Writer's Workshop
There are three main parts to Reader's & Writer's Workshop.
1. Mini-lesson - This is when I teach a specific strategy/skill or concept.
2. Work Time - This is when students practice the skill taught by spending time reading/writing.
3. Sharing Time - Students are given time to share how they have applied the reading strategy or a piece of writing they have created.
Students need a lot of time to practice reading strategies. It's also important that the time spent reading is done using texts that are "just right" for the student. We will be practicing choosing "just right" books in class. Likewise, students learn to write by having many opportunities to practice writing in fun and engaging ways. I believe that fostering a love for reading and writing is very important at this age. Every attempt to read/write should be praised and encouraged. Therefore, we will be using inventive spelling, so students can practice writing words how they sound, at the beginning of the year. As the year progresses and we learn to spell high frequency sight words, students will be expected to write these words correctly, using our word wall/writing folder. Finally, students will have choice in writing about what they know and love and what books they would like to read.
