Daily 5
The daily 5 is a researched based approach to structuring time for reading/writing/phonics throughout the day. My philosophy is that students learn to read and write by practicing daily, in meaningful and authentic ways. They need to spend time looking at books and reading to themselves and others. They also need to be given choice in reading material and be provided fun activities to engage them in learning. They should also be encouraged to write about things they love and choice in what they read and write. There are five main components to the daily 5 structure.
READ TO SELF
READ TO SOMEONE
LISTEN TO READING
WORD WORK
WORK ON WRITING
The sixth component is MEET WITH THE TEACHER. This is when I meet with small groups of students to work on strategies and meet the needs of individual students.
